Analysis on China Steel Import& Export for January-December, 2009

In the whole year of 2009, China steel import and export performed better than the expectation in early this year.

According to statistics released by China Customs, China ’s steel export hit a year-to-date new high of 3.33 million tonnes in December, 2009, but it was 57 percent lower than 7.68 million tonnes in August, 2008. China imported 1.48 million tonnes of steel products in December, 2009, up 190,000 tonnes or 15.5 percent month on month compared to 1.29 million tonnes in November. Net exports of steel products hit 1.85 million tonnes in December. China exported 9400 tonnes of semis and imported 92,500 tonnes in December.

China imported 17.64 million tonnes and exported 24.58 million tonnes of steel products in 2009, up 2.26 million tonnes or 14.67 percent year on year and down 34.63 million tonnes or 58.49 percent from a year earlier. Net exports of steel products reached 6.93 million tonnes in 2009, down 36.87 million tonnes or 84.18 percent compared with 43.80 million tonnes in 2008. Semis exports slumped 96.6 percent to 43,000 tonnes in 2009 while exports increased 17.67 times to 4.585 million tonnes, forming a net import of 4.542 million tonnes.

China exported 5.56 million tonnes of steel products to S Korea in the whole year of 2009, accounting for 22.64 percent of total exports. Net export to S Korea was 1.57 million tonnes, holding for 22.7 percent of total net exports. Net export of Chinese steel products to US attained 890,000 tonnes, sharing 12.87 percent of total net exports.

China imported 5.44 million tonnes of steel products from Japan in the whole year of 2009, occupying 31.16 percent of the total imports; China exported 420,000 tonnes of steel products to Japan , covering 1.71 percent of the total exports. China ’s net imports from Japan ran up to 5.02 million tonnes in 2009, taking up 72.44 percent of total imports.

IV Trade value

In the whole year of 2009, China steel imports valued US$19.622 billion, and steel exports valued US$22.317 billion, that is, US$2.695 billion trade surplus.

Average steel import price was US$1112 per tonne, and steel export price averaged at US$908 per tonne, forming a price gap of US$204 per tonne.

During January-December, 2009, export price was 81.65 percent of import price, up 23.82 percentage points compared with 57.83 percent in 2007 and up 10.87 percentage points compared with 70.78 percent in 2008. However, it is 22.1 percentage points lower than 103.75 percent in May, 2009.

According to the above figures, China steel export is expected to reach 30 million tonnes in 2010, up 22 percent compared with 24.58 million tonnes in 2009 and down 60 percent compared with 59.18 million tonnes in 2008. China steel imports may reach 15 million tonnes, down 15 percent compared with17.64 million tonnes in 2009 and flat over 2008’ s 15.38 million tonnes. The trade surplus is predicted to achieve 15 million tonnes and steel exports might take up 5 percent of 600 million tonnes crude steel production.
