BHP Billiton-Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA)
and Japanese steelmaker Nippon Steel &Sumitomo Metal Corp (NSSMC)
have agreed to settle the third-quarter contract price for hard coking
coal benchmark price at $145 per tonne FOB Australia, $27 per tonne
lower than the second quarter, according to Platts sources.
The price would apply to BMA's Peak Downs and Saraji premium
low-volatile hard coking coal brands, while premium mid-vol Goonyella
was reportedly settled at $142 per tonne FOB, also down $27 per tonne.
The deal is in line with the latest
market expectations, after a recent fall in spot prices eroded initial
estimates of $150-155 per tonne.
Such a deal is about $15 per tonne
above the latest spot market levels, which were assessed by Platts at
$129.50 per tonne FOB Australia Monday.
