In April 2018, National Development and Reform Commission made it clear that a total of 150 million tons of coal capacity was to be eliminated in the year of 2018. The authorities aimed to incessantly enhance the quality of coal supply system, as well as transform from gross capacity reduction to systematic capacity reduction and structural capacity optimization.
From 2016 to July 2018, it was calculated that 560 million tons of coal capacity was phased out. China completed 70% of the goal set in the 13th Five-Year Plan.
Of this, Shanxi province reduced 68.90 million tons of coal capacity. Guizhou province cut 53.14 million tons of coal capacity. Sichuan province cut 39.51 million tons of coal capacity and Hebei province reduced 36.37 million tons. Coal industry has entered the phase of structural capacity reduction.
