Brazilian Flat, Long Steel Imports down in January

Brazilian flat steel imports dropped by 27.48% year on year in January, while imports of long steel products dropped by 13.76% in the same comparison, according to figures released by the country's foreign trade ministry, MDIC.

Shipments of flat steel products fell to 88,153 tonnes last month, compared with 121,552 tonnes in January 2018.

Imports of flat steel from China amounted to 67,252 tonnes, up from 50,096 tonnes a year before. Of this total, 30,748 tonnes were hot-dipped galvanized coil, against 11,814 tonnes a year before.

But shipments of heavy plate from Austria plummeted to 425 tonnes, down from 43,962 tonnes in January 2018.

More recently, buyers of flat steel in South America, including Brazil, have been rejecting high-priced offers from China . And mills have been trying to apply price increases after the week-long Lunar New Year holiday, celebrated February 4-10, a development that could reduce import volumes in the following months.

Fastmarkets' weekly price assessment of HDG imports into South America stood at $590-600 per tonne cfr on February 8, unchanged from the previous week, while the price for plate imports was similarly stable at $535-550 per tonne cfr.

Meanwhile, Brazilian long steel imports slipped to 18,013 tonnes in January, down from 20,887 tonnes a year before.

Imports of sections from the United States into Brazil reached 3,106 tonnes last month, up from only 72 kilos in January 2018. But imports of sections from Spain dropped to 27 tonnes, from 2,716 tonnes a year before.

Rebar imports came to 75 tonnes in January. Brazil did not import any volumes of rebar in January 2018.
