Turkey imported 32,377 tonnes of rebar from Iran in January compared to 71t in January 2018, according to Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data monitored by Kallanish. Their average value was $349/t compared to a Turkish rebar export average price in January of $473/t.

Turkish imports of rebar from Iran have accelerated since last July, with October, November and December intake totalling 6,680t, 14,859t and 19,632t respectively. Iran-origin rebar imports in full-year 2018 reached 50,143t compared to almost zero in 2017.

At the start of this year Turkey reinstated its 10% duty on rebar imports in response to increasing tonnages of Iranian product coming into the country (see Kallanish passim).

Last November the Turkish Steel Exporters Association (CIB) called for measures to protect against what it saw to be state-subsidised exports of rebar from Iran to Turkey. “We’re observing Iran intensifying cross-border exports to Turkey without regard for seismic design requirements,” said CIB chairman Adnan Aslan at the time.

Turkish imports of Iranian hot rolled flat products reached 14,646t in 2018 versus zero in 2017.
Imports of Iran-origin semi-finished product, however, fell to only 2,530t in 2018 versus 118,284t a year earlier.

The overall value of Turkish imports from Iran of ferrous products under HS chapter 72 fell -27% on-year in 2018 to $64.15 million.
