The South Indian Metal Container Association opposed imposing anti-dumping duties on tin-plated (SPTE) flat steel products from the US, South Korea, Japan, and EU.
After the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry started the anti-dumping investigation in late June, the association sent a letter to the ministry. The association believed that tariffs would cause a monopoly supply from local steel mills, as the domestic production capacity of SPTE (around 620,000 tons a year) was currently insufficient to provide domestic demand (around 1 million tons a year).
The anti-dumping investigation was filed by two tin-plate manufacturer, JSW Vallabh Tinplate and The Tinplate Company of India.
Besides, the South Indian Metal Container Association said, the third domestic tinplate factory (built by JSW Steel) would start production in the first half of 2020. After the start of the operation, domestic supply and demand would reach equilibrium.
