The Mexico government declared a safeguard measure on steel imports, imposing a six-month provisional tariff of 15 percent ad valorem on steel products including plate, hot rolled coils, cold rolled coils, wire rods, seamless pipe, welded tube, hot dipped zinc coated sheets, reinforcing steel bar and sections. The safeguard will take place on March 25 over the following six months period on imports of steel products from the countries with which Mexico has not reached the free trade agreements. The Mexican government had implemented the safeguard tariffs of 15 percent on steel imports previously over the past three years from October 2015 until January 31 2019.
The Mexican steel trade association, CANACERO, hailed the decision of the government and stated that the industry will strive to pull off the US Section 232 on the Mexican steel imports.
