According to the World Steel Association, the world steel scrap export increased 4.0 percent last year, totaling 102.2 million tons and import up 1.7 percent to 103.0 million tons respectively. The most increase in both export and import took place in Europe, from its 28-member of the EU scrap export accounted for above half of the world scrap export, while import tonnage took the highest also totaling 32.7 million tons.
Especially Asia’s scrap exports decreased 17.3 percent to 12.4 million tons, but import increased 4.4 percent to 33 million tons. By country, the US scrap exports took the first ranking with 17.3 million tons, followed by the UK with 8.7 million tons, Germany 8.1 million tons, Japan 7.4 million tons, France 6.4 million tons and the Netherlands 6.2 million tons respectively.
On the scrap import front, Turkey topped with 20.7 million tons, followed by Korea 6.4 million tons, Italy 5.6 million tons, the US 5 million tons, Belgium 4.5 million tons and Germany 4.5 million tons each.
The overseas scrap experts said that last year’s scrap trade tonnage across the world increased slightly, while the EU represented over half in particular, and the US as well as Turkey defended the No.1 trade in export and import respectively, and major countries remained the same rankings as in 2017. Meanwhile, the scrap export tonnage increased 99.8 million tons with a 13.5 percent and import 98.4 million tons with a 12.3 percent gain in 2017.
