According to statistics, total shipments of the US' coking coal were around 4.7 million tons in June, down by 5.3% year on year. Due to the decline in demand for coking coal in Asia and Latin America, the US' coking coal exports in the first half of 2019 fell by 8.8% year on year, which came to approximately 26 million tons.
During the first half of this year, the total volume of US' coking coal exports to Asia declined by 17.6% year on year. Shipments to India and China fell by 36.8% and 60.4% respectively.
Although the US' coking coal imports to India declined, Indian steel mills were expected to continue to import US' coking coal as an alternative source of coking coal from Australia.
As for China, Chinese additional imposition of a 25% import tariff on the US' coal and the trade tension between China and the US caused a decline in US' coking coal exports to China as expected.
