In the third quarter of 2019, Russia exported 52.06 million tons of coal, a slight increase of 3% compared with 50.32 million tons in the same period of last year; basically the same with the export volume of 52.01 million tons in the second quarter of 2019.
After entering the third quarter, coal export volume of Russia rose significantly in that month, but since then, due to insufficient demand in July and August, the export gradually slowed down. From January to September of 2019, Russia's coal export increased slightly, with a total export volume of 158.44 million tons, an increase of 6% on a yearly basis.
In the third quarter of 2019, the export volume of thermal coal in Russia was 38.32 million tons, up 8% year-on-year; coking coal was 6.5 million tons, down 7% year-on-year.
China is the leading exporter of Russian coal. In the third quarter, China imported 7.26 million tons of coal from Russia, up 30% year-on-year, down 6% month on month; Japan imported 5.67 million tons of coal from Russia, up 11% and 31% month on month respectively; South Korea imported 5.59 million tons of coal from Russia, down 16% year on year, basically flat month on month.
