Fundamentals:

In 2019, China announced the eight types of scrap metal (steel scrap, aluminum scrap, copper scrap, etc.) moved from its Catalogue of Solid Waste Not Restricted to Import as Raw Materials List to its Catalogue of Solid Waste Restricted to Import as Raw Materials List beginning July 1, 2019. Then, in the second half of 2019, the import of steel scrap used for steel production was almost stagnant in China. Therefore, China Association of Metalscrap Utilization (CAMU) appealed authorities to recover the imports under the premise of ensuring quality, which is conducive to reducing the cost of steelmaking raw materials for steel mills and has a huge deployment effect on the market.

Meanwhile, CAMU pointed out that China should encourage the import of high-quality steel scrap that has no impact on environmental protection, rename it Renewable Steel Materials to avoid poor quality scrap imports, and bridge connection with international standards.
