Brazilian slab producer Companhia Siderúrgica do Pecém (CSP) saw its shipments grow on-year in August. They were however down compared to July volumes, according to local port authority data monitored by Kallanish.
CSP’s August slab exports reached 238,564 tonnes, up 5.7% on-year but -4.8% less over the 250,579t exported in July. Eight-month slab exports amounted to 1,815,753t, down -2.6% compared to 1,864,220t in January-August 2019, the Pecém port terminal data show.
According to the Port of Ceará, the main destination for the steelmaker’s slab shipments to the end of August was the US, which took 41% of overall exports. China was the next largest importer with a share of 20%, while Canada took a 6% share. The Brazilian market had a share of 4%.
CSP is the fourth-largest steelmaker in Brazil. The company is a joint venture formed by Vale (50% share) and South Korean companies Dongkuk (30%) and Posco (20%).
According to the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (Mdic), Brazil’s exports of semi-finished products were 696,000t in August. This was up by 8.2% year-on-year and 5.3% more versus the 661,000t shipped abroad in July. Year-to-date semis shipments were just -0.8% less on-year at 5,709,602t, Mdic data show.
