China’s iron ore imports
increased by 9.3% to 109 million tonnes in September 2020 from 994
million tonnes in the same month a year before, latest data from China’s
General Administration of Customs (GAC). The cumulative imports in the
first nine months this year came to 869 million tonnes, up 10.8% y/o/y.
The largest exporter of iron ore
to China during September this year was Australia. The imports from
Australia totaled 61.93 million tonnes, up 4.2% y/o/y. The second
largest source was Brazil with 22.97 million tonnes, down 2.7% y/o/y.
The third largest exporter of iron ore to China was India with 4.54
million tonnes, up 70.4% y/o/y. The fourth and fifth were South Africa
(3.91 million tonnes) and Ukraine (3.03 million tonnes).
From the data above, the main
sources of iron ore imports to China are still Australia and Brazil,
accounting for 57% and 21% of the total imports in September
respectively.
