According to an announcement by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Mexico has committed to exercising closer vigilance to prevent steel exports from third countries to the United States through its territory, in exchange for that Washington will maintain free trade in the sector.
The export inspection regime aims to prevent the overflow of products such as tubes, pipes, and semi-finished steel products from China and other countries to the United States via Mexico. Previously, some countries export their products to Mexico before it ships them to the United States, as a way to avoid tariffs.
In the statement, USTR said that Mexico will establish a strict surveillance regime for exports of metal plates and electrical transformer cores outside the United States. The United States and Mexico will also hold consultations at regular intervals on the implementation of these measures, as well as on the bilateral trade situation and market conditions for these products.
