German Stahl-Holding-Saar (SHS) said that it had initiated a tender to
purchase up to 50,000 tons of green hydrogen for its green steel
projects. Hydrogen plays an important role in the Saarland-based holding
company's Power4Steel decarbonization project.
From 2027/28, SHS and its affiliates aimed to produce 3.5 million tons
of green steel annually and advance towards a 70% conversion to
eco-friendly operations.
As part of the project, SHS is constructing a direct reduced iron (DRI)
plant at its facility in Dilligen. The company also plans to install
electric arc furnaces (EAF) in both Dilligen and Völklingen, where green
hydrogen will play a pivotal role in the steel production process.
