The last month of 2020 saw surge in Chinese domestic steel prices, while export market was mixed despite of rising demand in outside of the country.

Chinese hot rolled coil is being bought by seaborne buyers, especially Southeast Asian nations, because of the demand reemergence and supply tension. As told by one largest international trading body, 3.0mm HRC was dealt with Southeastern buyer at the price of 630 US dollars per ton (FOB, China), and heavy plate settled at 600-610 dollars per ton (FOB). The HRC export price, up by 10 dollars in one week, was equivalent to 4535 RMB per ton, still enjoying mild profit in shipments.

As another trading body introduced, buyers from Vietnam was largely interested in SAE1006 2mm HR coild, used as CR substrate, produced by Chinese steel giant Baosteel, with a final deal 680 dollars per ton (CFR), closed.

While, Chinese mills are unwilling to export CRC which is strongly demand and fully booked in domestic market for the robust automobile, house appliance and container industries. A few bookings of black CRC were exported to South Africa, as we heard last week, at the price of 670 dollars per ton (FOB).

Hot dipped galvanized sheet export is seldom quoted by big-scaled producers, with very few available shipments quoted at 730-740 dollars per ton (FOB).

According to Customs of China, the steel export in November was 4.40 million tons, a decline of 3.8 percent on year, while daily shipments grew by 12.6 percent over daily one in October. The combined shipments in 11 months totaled 48.83 million tons, a sharp contraction of 18.1 percent on year.

The November volume was mainly signed in September when exporters were joyful as international market was starting to recover. Similarly, the number of orders booked in October and November kept increasing. SteelHome predicts that steel export in December will be roughly 4 million tons, bringing 2020 export volume to 52.8 million tons which will see 18 percent lost from 2019.
