According to the Ministry of Ecological Environment, China, the European
Union and Canada jointly held the fifth Ministerial Conference on
climate action in the form of video on March 23. Huang Runqiu, Minister
of the Ministry of Ecological Environment, stressed that the “14th
Five Year Plan” was a key period for China to achieve peak carbon
dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality. China would adopt more
effective policies and measured to formulate and implement an action
plan for peak carbon dioxide emissions.
Huang Runqiu said that China attached great importance to addressing
climate change, actively promoted global climate governance, and made
historic contribution to the conclusion and entry into force of the
Paris Agreement. In promoting high-quality economic development. China
would combine the adjustment of economic structure, optimization of
energy structure, and improvement of ecological environment. China would
embark on a green and low-carbon development path in line with China's
national conditions, and achieving remarkable results. From 2005 to
2020, China’s GDP increase by about 4.5 times. The carbon intensity
would decrease by 48.4 percent in the same period, and the proportion of
non-fossil energy would increase from 7.4 percent to 15.9 percent,
greatly exceeding the climate commitment to 2020.
According to Huang Runqiu, China would implement strong carbon dioxide
emission control targets, increase the control of methane and other
greenhouse gases, accelerate the construction and operation of the
national carbon market, and take the initiative to adapt to climate
change. China would vigorously promote the innovation and application of
low-carbon technologies, and continuously promote the comprehensive
green transformation of economic and social development. |
