According to statistics, South Korea imported around 590,000 tons of scrap in March, rising by 48.1% compared to the previous month and also hiking by 86.7% from the same month a year ago. The figure hit a three-year high since the volume recorded in March 2019.
Among them, the imports from Japan accounted for the largest proportion, totaling roughly 340,000 tons, up by 43.2% year on year. The US ranked second with 106,000 tons, surging by 1,012.2% year on year, followed by Russia’s 47,000 tons, a year-on-year increase of 76.8%. The imports from Russia weren’t impacted by the sanctions.
In the first quarter of this year, South Korea’s scrap imports amounted to approximately 1.34 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 48%. Japan was the largest import source during the period, accounting for 64.3% of the total, with nearly 860,000 tons, up by 32.7%.
