Synopsis:
Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works invested over $209 million in environmental initiatives last year, with $165 million dedicated to the construction of permanent environmental facilities. The company's efforts have led to significant reductions in pollutant emissions and discharges, as well as increased usage of production waste as secondary raw materials.

Article:
In a resolute commitment to sustainable steel production, Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has taken a bold stride towards environmental stewardship by allocating more than RUB 19 billion to ecological activities in the past year. Of this substantial sum, RUB 15 billion was earmarked for the construction of permanent environmental facilities, demonstrating the company's unwavering dedication to mitigating its environmental impact.

Throughout the year, MMK embarked on an ambitious campaign, implementing 46 projects aimed at preventing or reducing the negative effects of its operations on the environment. An additional 16 projects are currently in progress, further underscoring the company's ongoing efforts to promote sustainable practices within the steel industry.

As a result of these concerted efforts, MMK has made remarkable strides in its environmental performance. Specific emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere decreased by an impressive 9.3% over the course of the year, dropping from 14.55 kg per metric ton of steel to 13.2 kg per metric ton. Similarly, specific discharges of pollutants into bodies of water saw a significant 19% reduction, falling from 1.63 kg per metric ton of steel to 1.32 kg per metric ton.

In a noteworthy display of resource efficiency, MMK successfully repurposed 1.7 million metric tons of production waste as secondary raw material in its sinter mix. Furthermore, the company processed an astounding 9.6 million metric tons of flowing and waste slag at specialized plants, demonstrating its commitment to maximizing the utilization of byproducts and minimizing waste.

One of MMK's flagship environmental projects is the large-scale modernization of its coke production facility. This ambitious undertaking encompasses the construction of a new coke plant (No. 12) and the reconstruction of the biochemical plant and the chemical product recovery and processing shop. Once the new coke plant becomes operational, MMK will be in a position to decommission outdated capacities, resulting in a substantial reduction of gross emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere by 11.35 thousand metric tons per year.
Underpinning MMK's environmental initiatives is a comprehensive long-term programme that spans all of its production processes and prioritizes the adoption of the best available technologies. This forward-thinking approach has enabled the company to consistently reduce its environmental impact and ensure that its production processes are conducted in a manner that is safe for the environment.

MMK's unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship is a testament to its leadership in the steel industry. By investing heavily in sustainable practices and implementing cutting-edge technologies, the company is setting a powerful example for its peers and demonstrating that economic success and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

Conclusion:
Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works' significant investment of over RUB 19 billion in environmental activities last year is a resounding affirmation of the company's dedication to sustainable steel production. Through the implementation of numerous projects and the construction of permanent environmental facilities, MMK has achieved remarkable reductions in pollutant emissions and discharges while simultaneously increasing the utilization of production waste as secondary raw materials.
